Geisha costumes are made up of a few elements.
The main part of the costume is the kimono. This is a one piece robe that covers the arms and legs. Variations on the kimono exist as do the embroidered patterns of each kimono. In terms of Halloween geisha costumes, this usually means the length of the kimono and the type of pattern.
The obi is another important part of the costume. This is a sash that is tied around the waist and knotted at the back. The pattern of the knot can often be very elaborate and give shape to the whole costume.
Geisha wear split toed socks generally white in color. They may also wear a flip flop like sandal indoors or outdoors. If the weather is bad they will wear a wooden clog with a raised sole.
Other than the actual garments, a Geisha is noted for the heavy make up and hairstyle. Make up varies depending on the seniority of the Geisha but young Geisha (or Maiko) will wear heavy white makeup completely covering their faces. There is an art to applying the make up correctly and it can often take many hours to complete.
The same applies to the hairstyle. These days many Geisha will wear a wig rather than spend hours getting their hair done.
Depending on how authentic you want to look, applying the make up and hairstyle can be dropped or partially done. If you want to really look good then a wig might be a quick way to active the look. The kimono and obi are fairly easy to get these days but if you want a particular pattern or theme to the Kimono then you may have to look around.
