As a newbie in judo, one of the things you'll have to get for yourself is a Judo gi. The challenge is, how would you know what sort of gi to purchase? And how many different types of Gi there are?
It's not complicated really. There are only two kinds of Judo Gi you should know at this point of time right now:
1) The Single Weave Gi - These are normally made with a light weight material and surprisingly, can hold up to the rigours of judo training. Beginners generally choose single weave because it's light and allows them more mobility and costs cheaper at the same time.
2) The Double Weave Gi - Double Weave Gis are made with extra material and are much heavier than the single weave version. This thicker material is for strength and durability, and most advancing students switch from the single weave which they bought as beginners to the double weave later.
In competitions, slightly more advanced Judokas select the thick double weave gi because a thicker lapel makes it challenging for the opponent to get a good grip.
How do you select a solid, durable double weave judo gi for tournaments then?
The main point is to look for one that is thick and durable yet soft in texture for comfort. The problem with most martial arts companies is that they produce thick and rigid double-weave judo gis that is actually not comfortable and will affect the Judoka's performance.
Try getting one that is made using preshrunk fabric. This is to minimize further shrinkage and the judoka ends up with a gi that truly fits him. Under current IJF rules, the gi fabric weight must not exceed 1000gm/2.
