Traditional Kimono


With Halloween rolling around once again, everyone is scrambling for their favorite fancy dress costume. You can't go far wrong with the scary type costumes, like the vampire, zombie and witch themes but for something slightly different what about a Japanese themed idea. For men, this is the Samurai costume. For women, it is the Geisha costume. This article will cover what a Geisha costume is made up of and why you might want to wear one for Halloween.
A Geisha is a woman that has been trained in the art of entertaining - Japanese style. A Geisha will go through many years as an apprentice, learning her trade so to speak. And her trade is varied, she will be skills in performing various ceremonies, like the tea ceremony, and she will also be able to play musical instruments and recite poetry. In brief, she is a Japanese cultural icon and upholds many traditions that are unique to Japan.
Apart form what she does, a Geisha also has a truly unique look. The most striking feature of a Geisha is her makeup. Young Geishas (or Maiko) will wear heavy white makeup all over the face. The lips will be heavily rouged to offset the pale face and create a striking look. The hairstyle is also unique. It is pulled back off the face in a bun like shape.
A Geisha will wear a kimono. The kimono can be an elaborate or plain piece of apparel depending on the individual and the occasion. Around her waist the Geisha will wear an Obi. This is a sash that can also be very elaborate. It will will tied at the back in a creative shape and often defines the shape of the costume.
These are the key elements of a Geisha costume. As kimonos are quite popular, it would be easy to approximate a Geisha costume yourself, but you can also get fancy dress and genuine outfits to wear. They make for a unique and charming costume for Halloween that will get plenty of attention from fellow party goers because of the elegant and exotic look that you will achieve.
